Young Beats – Best Popular 14 Songs 1967 Japan red vinyl LP with obi and cheesecake cover

young beats - KAYOKYOKU BEST 14 japan lp

Offered for sale is an original red vinyl copy of the Japan-only instrumental LP Kayokyoku Best 14 (Best Popular 14 Songs) by the Young Beats, including a cheesecake cover and the original obi.

The Young Beats were a Japanese instrumental guitar group similar to the Ventures.

About this copy: This copy of Kayokyoku Best 14 is a 1967 pressing on the Toshiba label, pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl.

The cover is M-, with  a couple of minor creases.  The obi is M-; the “hojyuhyo,” or reorder tag, is still attached.

This LP was issued without an insert.  The original envelope-style inner sleeve is included.

The red vinyl disc is M- and may be unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a pretty good record that is rarely found complete.

Background: We don’t know much about the Young Beats.  They were one of many bands to pop up during the mid-1960’s “Eleki” (electric) movement in Japan, inspired by the Ventures.

We know they released at least four albums in Japan between 1967 and 1969.

This LP consists of 14 guitar instrumentals.  We can’t find a video of a track from this album, but the track below is typical of how this album sounds.

Tracks on this album (roughly translated via OCR) are:

Side one

1. Love Opens at Night
2. I Want to Believe
3. Forget
4. Silver Road
5. Sleepless Night Blues
6. Dream Tomorrow
7. I’m Going to Tell You

Side two

1. You Are My Life
2. Thank You Again Tonight, Nightly.

Bill Evans – Waltz for Debby Japan LP with obi

bill evans - waltz for debby japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Waltz for Debby by the Bill Evans Trio, complete with original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Waltz for Debby is a 1975 Japanese issue of an album that was originally released in 1962.

The cover is VG++ with no wear but with a couple of small corner dents.   The obi is M-.  The insert is included and is M-.

The disc is M-, with a few spindle marks on the side two label and only one on the side one label, but no marks on the vinyl.  It appears that the previous owner preferred to play side one only.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific (and great-sounding) jazz LP and an album that we rarely have in stock for very long.

Background: The Bill Evans Trio of the early 1960s is regarded as one of the most important groups in jazz history, though their time together was cut short by the untimely death of bassist Scott LaFaro in an auto accident. One of the trio’s last gigs was at the Village Vanguard in New York, and the recordings taken from those dates yielded two albums – Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby.

Waltz for Debby is one of those albums that managed to perfectly merge great performances with a great recording, and the album has long been a favorite of both jazz buffs and audiophiles. Original pressings are long out of print and sell for upwards of $1000, and they’re likely worth it.

Allmusic.com gave Waltz for Debby a 5 star review:

Recorded at the Village Vanguard in 1961, shortly before Scott LaFaro’s death, Waltz for Debby is the second album issued from that historic session, and the final one from that legendary trio that also contained drummer Paul Motian. While the Sunday at the Village Vanguard album focused on material where LaFaro soloed prominently, this is far more a portrait of the trio on those dates. …. Here Motian’s brushwork is delicate, flighty and elegant, and LaFaro controls the dynamic of the tune with his light as a feather pizzicato work and makes Evans’ deeply emotional statements swing effortlessly. Of the many recordings Evans issued, the two Vanguard dates and Explorations are the ultimate expressions of his legendary trio.

Heart – Heart Japan LP with obi

heart - heart japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Heart by Heart, including the original obi.

This is the first issue of the album with the blue obi; the second issue, released the same year, had a red one.

About this copy: This copy of Heart is a 1985 pressing on the Capitol label.

The cover is VG++ with no wear, but with a bend in the upper right hand corner.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M-, with a few spindle marks on the side two label and only one on the side one label, but no marks on the vinyl.  It appears that the previous owner preferred to play side one only.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce Heart LP.

Background: Released in 1985, Heart was the eighth studio album by Heart and their only album to reach #1 on the U.S. charts, selling more than five million copies.

The album put four singles into the U.S. Top 10: “What About Love” (#10), “Never” (#4), “These Dreams” (#1), and “Nothin’ at All” (#10.)

Allmusic.com gave Heart a 4 1/2 star review:

Heart was pretty much considered washed up when they released Heart in 1985. They learned a few important things while they had taken a short sabbatical — they knew that hooks were important and they knew they could play up their looks for MTV. So, they delivered both with Heart, giving their audience anthemic hooks and tightly corseted bosoms, leading to the most popular album they ever had. … There’s still a lot of filler on this record, but the best moments are among the best mainstream AOR of its era.

Hawkwind – The Xenon Codex 1988 UK LP

hawkwind - the xenon codex uk lp

Offered for sale is an original UK pressing of the 1988 LP The Xenon Codex by Hawkwind with the limited edition die-cut foldout cover.

This pressing was quite limited on vinyl, as most people bought the album on compact disc when new.

About this copy: This copy of The Xenon Codex is a 1988 UK pressing on the GWR label.

The cover is VG++ and close to M-, with trace edge wear.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.

This came from our own collection.  We bought it new and have probably played it twice.

A nice copy of a terrific and rather underrated LP.

Background: Released in 1988, The Xenon Codex was the fifteenth studio album by Hawkwind.

The album reached #79 on the UK charts, but did not chart in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave The Xenon Codex a 3 star review:

Coming from the late-’80s period of the band, this is a strong album from a fertile period in the musical history of this group. Although not considered the classic era of Hawkwind, the band released albums that were consistently quite strong during this era. Xenon Codex, although not the strongest album from that time, has a lot of very good material. Cuts that really set themselves apart from the rest include “The War I Survived” and the awesome “Sword of the East.”

Heart – Dog & Butterfly 1988 UK LP

heart - dog & butterfly uk lp

Offered for sale is a UK pressing of Dog & Butterfly by Heart.

About this copy: This copy of Dog & Butterfly is a 1988 pressing on the Portrait label.

This version of the LP does not have a gatefold cover.

The cover is VG++ with slight corner wear.  The generic inner sleeve is M-.

The record is M- with a couple of faint sleeve scuffs.

This copy came from our own collection and we bought it new in 1988.  It’s likely been played no more than twice.

A nice copy of a terrific Heart LP.  We prefer the sound of this pressing to the Japanese one.

Background: Released in 1978, Dog & Butterfly was the fourth album by Heart.

The album reached #17 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Dog & Butterfly a 3 1/2 star review:

Dog & Butterfly became Heart’s fourth million-selling album and placed two songs of opposing styles in the Top 40. Like their Magazine album, Dog & Butterfly peaked at number 17 on the charts, but the material from it is much stronger from every standpoint, with Ann and Nancy Wilson involving themselves to a greater extent. The light, afternoon feel of the title track peaked at number 34, while the more resounding punch of “Straight On” went all the way to number 15 as the album’s first single.

Beatles – Let It Be UK white vinyl LP

beatles -let it be uk white vinyl lp

Offered for sale is a limited edition white vinyl pressing of Let It Be by the Beatles, issued in Great Britain in 1978 for export only.

About this copy: This copy of Let It Be is a 1978 pressing on the Apple label.

The cover is VG++, with slight lamination wear at the mouth of the cover.   For some reason, this title is prone to lamination issues.  The cover retains the original shrink wrap, though it does have several tears.

The white vinyl disc is M-, and the record has clearly had very little play.

A beautiful copy of a record that’s become quite hard to find in recent years.

Background: In the late 1970s, collectors were showing a lot of interest in colored vinyl, so record companies around the world began pressing both old and (then-) new titles on colored vinyl as limited edition pressings.

In Great Britain, EMI Records pressed four different titles by the Beatles on colored vinyl: Magical Mystery Tour (yellow), Abbey Road (green), The Beatles (white), and Let It Be, which was also pressed on white vinyl.

All four titles were pressed for export only, and were not sold within the United Kingdom.  Most, if not all, of those titles were exported to the United States, where they were readily available for the short time they were in print.

All four titles are scarce today.

Let It Be was the final studio album by the Beatles, released in May, 1970.  As the album was technically a soundtrack album to the film of the same name, distribution of the album was handled by ABCKO, the company that belonged to Beatles manager Allen Klein, rather than Capitol Records.

When Apple Records was dissolved in 1975, Let It Be became the only Beatles studio album to go out of print, and it was actually out of print for several years in the late 1970s and occasionally turned up for sale in discount bins.

Allmusic.com gave Let It Be a 4 1/2 star review:

The only Beatles album to occasion negative, even hostile reviews, there are few other rock records as controversial as Let It Be.   … All that said, the album is on the whole underrated, even discounting the fact that a sub-standard Beatles record is better than almost any other group’s best work. …As flawed and bumpy as it is, it’s an album well worth having, as when the Beatles were in top form here, they were as good as ever.

Jefferson Airplane – Bark sealed original U.S. LP with brown outer bag

jefferson airplane - bark u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed original U.S. pressing of Bark by the Jefferson Airplane, including the rare paper bag outer cover.

This outer cover was usually discarded after purchase and is hard to find today.

About this copy: This copy of Bark is a 1971 pressing on the Grunt label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact except for the lower right hand corner, where there is a punch hole and a small saw mark.

An original price tag (not shown) is still attached to the shrink wrap.

This copy does not have the hype sticker on the back of the wrap listing band members and song titles.

A beautiful copy of an album that is rarely found complete.

Background: Released in 1971, Bark was the sixth studio album by the Jefferson Airplane.

The album reached #11 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Bark a 3 star review:

Bark, Jefferson Airplane’s seventh album, was an album of firsts: it was the first Airplane album in almost two years, the first made after the arrival of violinist Papa John Creach and the departure of band founder Marty Balin, and the first to be released on the group’s own Grunt Records label. It was also the first Airplane album made after the onset of that familiar rock group disease, solo career-itis. Rhythm guitarist Paul Kantner had released his Blows Against the Empire, and Hot Tuna, the band formed by lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady, had released two albums since the last Airplane group release, Volunteers. Bark, perhaps as a result, was not so much a group record as a bunch of songs made by alternating solo artists with backup by the other group members. …All of which is to say that there were some excellent songs on Bark (as well as some mediocre ones), even if the whole added up to less than the sum of the parts.

It’s a Beautiful Day – It’s a Beautiful Day sealed 1969 U.S. Columbia LP

it's a beautiful day - u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. copy of  It’s a Beautiful Day, the self-titled debut album by It’s a Beautiful Day.

About this copy: This copy of It’s a Beautiful Day is a 1969 U.S. pressing on the Columbia label.

As the album is sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.  The label variation is unknown;  It may have the original
“360° Sound” label or the later one that has “Columbia” repeated around the perimeter. (see photo)

The wrap is mostly intact; there are a couple of small tears in the wrap near the bottom center of the cover and the bottom left hand corner and tiny breaks in the wrap at the upper left and lower right corners.

A gorgeous copy of a classic 1960s LP, as this album is notoriously prone to cover wear.

Background: It’s a Beautiful Day came from San Francisco, but had a different sound from Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Grateful Dead, the Jefferson Airplane, or really, any other band from that area that emerged in the 1960s.  Led by David LaFlamme, the band’s leader played a violin, which wasn’t an instrument that one often heard in rock music at the time.

The band’s self-titled debut LP remains their best-known album, and it reached #47 on the U.S. album charts.  The track “White Bird” received regular airplay on FM radio for years after the album’s release, and continued to get airplay long after the album went out of print.  Deep Purple made generous use of the melody from “Bombay Calling” to repurpose it as “Child in Time.”

The album also features one of the most iconic pieces of album cover art ever, and it remains our all-time favorite album cover.

AllMusic.com gave It’s a Beautiful Day 4 1/2 stars:

Although they are not one of the better-known San Francisco bands to have emerged from the ballroom circuit of the late ’60s and early ’70s, It’s a Beautiful Day were no less memorable for their unique progressive rock style that contrasted well with the Bay Area psychedelic scene. Led by David LaFlamme (flute/violin/vocals) and his wife, Linda LaFlamme (keyboards), the six-piece unit on this album vacillates between light and ethereal pieces such as the lead-off cut, “White Bird,” to the heavier, prog rock-influenced “Bombay Calling.” One of the most distinct characteristics of It’s a Beautiful Day is their instrumentation. The prominence of David LaFlamme — former violin soloist with the Utah Symphony and original member of Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks — adds a refinement to It’s a Beautiful Day’s sound. Likewise, the intricate melodies — mostly composed by the LaFlammes — are structured around the band’s immense virtuosity, a prime example being the exquisitely haunting harpsichord-driven “Girl With No Eyes.”  It’s a Beautiful Day remains as a timepiece and evidence of how sophisticated rock & roll had become in the fertile environs of the San Francisco music scene.

Genesis – Seconds Out Japan 2 LP set with obi

genesis - seconds out japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of the double live album Seconds Out by Genesis, including the original obi and insert.

About this copy: This copy of Seconds Out is a 1977 pressing on the Charisma label.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The lyric insert and custom inner sleeves are M-.

The two discs are M- and look unplayed.  Beautiful discs!

A gorgeous copy of a scarce Genesis LP.

Background: Released in October, 1977, Seconds Out was the second live album by Genesis, and the first to feature Phil Collins on vocals.

The album reached #4 on the UK charts and #47 on the U.S. charts.

Allmusic.com gave Seconds Out a 3 1/2 star review:

Seconds Out caught the band straddling both ends of their history, their second concert album and this time out a double LP. Apart from capitalizing on a successful tour, the album’s raison d’etre appears to have been to present the case to critics and longtime fans that post-Peter Gabriel Genesis, with Phil Collins as lead singer, was essentially the same band as Genesis fronted by Peter Gabriel. The original side one songs consisted of repertory from such post-Gabriel albums as Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering, and most of those live versions, including “Squonk,” “The Carpet Crawl” (positively ethereal), and “Afterglow,” are superior to the original studio renditions of the same songs. Indeed, part of the beauty of this album is the sheer flexibility of the band during this period — in addition to superb vocals by Collins throughout, the drumming by Chester Thompson is at least a match for Collins’ best playing.

Genesis – Wind and Wuthering original Japanese white label promotional LP with obi

genesis - wind and wuthering japan promo lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese white label promotional copy of Wind and Wuthering by Genesis, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Wind and Wuthering is a 1976 pressing on the Charisma label.

The cover is VG++ and close to M-, with slight edge and corner wear.  Most of the edge wear is under the obi on the left side of the top edge.

The obi is VG+, with a couple of minor repaired tears.

The lyric insert is M-.

The white label promo disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Beautiful disc!

A nice copy of a rare (and pretty good) Genesis LP.

Background: Released in 1976, Wind and Wuthering was the eighth studio album by Genesis, and the last to include guitarist Steve Hackett.

The album reached #7 on the UK charts and #26 in the U.S., making it their best-charting U.S. album up to that time.

Allmusic.com gave Wind and Wuthering a 4 star review:

Wind & Wuthering followed quickly on the heels of A Trick of the Tail and they’re very much cut from the same cloth, working the same English eccentric ground that was the group’s stock in trade since Trespass. But if A Trick of the Tail played like Genesis’ attempt at crafting a great Genesis record without Peter Gabriel, as a way of finding their footing as a quartet, Wind & Wuthering finds Genesis tentatively figuring out what their identity will be in this new phase of their career.
